The National Center on Sexual Exploitation's (NCOSE) Sexual Justice Advocate Internship program is designed to give undergraduate students, graduate students, and young professionals the opportunity to serve at NCOSE's headquarters in Washington, DC. Interns participate in the ongoing work of defending human dignity, exposing and combatting the full spectrum of sexual exploitation (i.e., pornography, prostitution, stripping, sexual trafficking, child sexual abuse, sexual assault and rape). NCOSE internships offer a unique opportunity to address sexual exploitation issues while gaining new skills through hands-on opportunities that seek to prevent exploitation before it begins, which foster a national culture that stands for freedom from sexual exploitation. Interns also enjoy abundant opportunities to meet nationally recognized leaders in the field of anti-sexual exploitation and attend education briefings. The program also offers interns an opportunity to investigate their individual gifts and develop new skills while working at NCOSE's headquarters.

TERM: 12-14 weeks

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The intern works on research projects as assigned by the VP & Director of the Research Institute, or the CEO. Such work may include:

• Conducting research and literature reviews as directed, using various media and academic resources relating to:
  • harms of pornography use such as addiction, neurological, and other physiological and behavioral impacts
  • harms of prostitution and other forms of commercial sex
  • demand for commercial sex and male sex buying behavior
  • child sexual abuse and online sexual exploitation children
  • racism and other social factors as contributors to sexual abuse and exploitation
  • organizations promoting, distributing, and/or profiting from sexual exploitation (pornography, stripping, prostitution, sexual assault, risky sexy behavior)
  • sex trafficking of men, women and children,
  • sex offenders and other topics
• Drafting research summaries and/or talking point documents
• Conduct research tasks associated with NCOSE's Demand Forum website
• Creating public health campaign strategic plan and materials
• Assisting with coordination of special events
• Development of educational materials and PowerPoint presentations
• Development of advocacy materials including letters, advocacy kits, fact sheets, study summaries, NCOSE store resources, booth displays, etc.
• Writing and editing for periodic blogs/bulletins/newsletters/letters
• Collecting and electronic filing of research studies
• Assisting NCOSE at conferences, meetings, events or committees as directed
• Assisting as needed with office management including answering of telephones, responding to email or other written requests, drafting correspondence, and filing
• Representing NCOSE (as an observer) and reporting on events at webinars, coalition meetings, as well as congressional hearings as directed

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in the review of literature and experience in the use of ATLAS.ti qualitative data analysis software to code qualitative data

• Passionate about opposing sexual exploitation in all its forms
• Pursuing a degree in public health or a related field
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Ability to multi-task
• Deadline-oriented
• Independent worker-must be able to complete tasks without constant management from staff
• Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office applications
• Being open to feedback and willing to make changes to written documents

COMPENSATION:

NCOSE is not able to offer compensation at this time.

SCHEDULE:

This position requires 32-40 hours per week. Candidates must be available during NCOSE's office hours of Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm EST.

LOCATION:

Internships will be based at NCOSE's Office Headquarters in Washington, DC. Remote intern applicants may be considered.
