Job Overview

The Vascular Access Nurse provides critical support for all vascular access needs of inpatient and outpatient populations by vascular access assessment, planning, placement, and care for patients as assigned. Utilizing your expert nursing skills, the Vascular Access Nurse will insert peripheral and ultrasound guided IVs, manage and monitor vascular access devices to prevent infections, and continuously improve staff competencies related to line care and maintenance. This position provides an opportunity to utilize your specialized vascular access knowledge to ensure the highest quality care for our pediatric patients.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)

Experience: Two (2) years of nursing experience and proficient with peripheral IV insertion and care.

Certification(s): BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire; PALS required within six months of hire.

Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Demonstrates clinical proficiency regarding the insertion and care of peripheral IV's, particularly for patients with difficult access using ultrasound guided technology when necessary.
  2. Prepares and collects laboratory specimens.
  3. Provides direction and oversight to the EMT- Vascular Access regarding care, prioritization, of the patient population that the Vascular Access team support.
  4. Assists PICC RN in procedures as needed, proficient in setting up for sterile procedures.
  5. Partners with staff nurses, providers, case managers and other team members to ensure early assessment for vascular access device selection and implementation based on the patient's plan of care.
  6. Initiates appropriate education and instruction to patients and families, based upon evaluation to meet their learning needs.
  7. Serves as a subject matter expert and provides consultation, education, and/or assistance to clinical care teams regarding the placement, care and maintenance of PIV's and solving vascular access related patient care problems.
  8. Rounds to assess patients with central access lines and completes dressing changes.
  9. Assesses patients and evaluates vascular access effectiveness, consulting with the clinical team to inform treatment and plan of care.
  10. Participates in data tracking, ongoing assessment, and process improvement to ensure quality in care and services.
  11. May participate in training and onboarding of less experienced PIV nurses.
Other Information

Guidelines: Developmental, standard, or intermediate level. Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.

Complexity: Falls between the entry and full performance/senior level. Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.

Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or that are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.

Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $75,957.07 to $113,935.61
Hourly Salary Range: $36.52 to $54.78
