Job Overview

The Behavioral Health Specialist Sr - Intensive Services is responsible for direct patient care and safety including supervision and management of children and adolescents hospitalized for severe psychiatric symptoms and are at risk for endangering themselves or other; performs duties and delivers therapeutic interventions under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric professional. This position may encounter potentially volatile care situations that could result in bodily harm. Develops and maintains a project that furthers the mission of the unit and benefits the patients, families, and/or staff of the unit.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with a minor in psychology or related field
  • Experience: 3 years of pediatric psych specialty experience in a therapeutic setting
  • Equivalency: Professional relevant experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Certification(s): Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR certification

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

Neonate - <30 days

Infancy - >30 days to 1yr

Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs

Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Provides direct patient care and management of children and adolescents hospitalized for severe psychiatric symptoms, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays and are at a high risk of endangering themselves or others while under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric professional.
  2. Delivers therapeutic interventions while under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric professional.
  3. Leads, monitors and collaborates educational and therapeutic groups for patients.
  4. Participates in clinical rounds, maintains communication with unit or department leadership.
  5. Assist licensed psychiatric professional in implementing functional assessment and treatment procedures with patients
  6. Responds as part of the Behavioral Assistance Resource Team; provides assistance to patients, family members or visitors 18 years of age and younger exhibiting the potential for harm to self or others.
  7. Ensures proper documentation of patient progress; completes 15-minute patient checks; provides one-to-one patient observation and or milieu management.
  8. Mentors less experienced Senior Behavior Specialists or new hires as required; may assist in training and orienting team members to department as needed.
  9. Assists new hires as required.
  10. Attends educational in-services for Behavior Specialists; participates in unit committees and educational offerings.
  11. Collaborates with other disciplines or departments on patient care and unit safety.
  12. Provides customer service as related to the Mental Health field.
  13. Completes assessments under the supervision of a psychologist/BCBA including a variety of functional analyses, preference assessments, and reinforcer assessments
  14. Implements individual behavior intervention plans developed by psychologist/BCBA
  15. Receive training in diabetic behavioral therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and, applied behavioral therapy (ABA)
  16. Manage and maintain safety of therapeutic milieu of multiple hospitalized inpatient/partial hospitalized psychiatric patients at one time
  17. Collect accurate data on the behavior of patients
  18. Collaborate with clinical team members to discuss intervention strategies for severe problem behaviors
  19. Maintain therapeutic rapport, unconditional positive regard, and a non-punitive approach with patients independent of patient behaviors
  20. Work with families to model positive behavioral intervention strategies and pro-social interactions with patient
  21. Develops and maintains a project that benefits the patients, families, and or staff of the unit and while also furthering the mission of the unit
  22. Participants and provides feedback to ACM on interviewing for BHS, RN, and any leadership positions as needed
  23. Serves on unit and/or hospital wide councils or committees as needed or by request of leadership

Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level. Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.

Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.

Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $48,962.61 to $73,443.91
Hourly Salary Range: $23.54 to $35.31
