Have you ever been curious about the inner mechanical workings of a water treatment facility? Want to know where our drinking water comes from, and how it gets from point A to B? We have a fantastic opportunity available to join our crew at the Lynn R. Morgan Water Treatment Plant!

Under the general supervision of the Plant Superintendent, you will participate in the operation, maintenance and monitoring of a water system to ensure adherence to standards and efficiency of operations.

At the entry level (Level I), work involves closely supervised training and a limited range of duties while you train to become D-level certified.

Schedule: This position does require rotating shift work (includes weekends), typically within the hours of 7am-3:30pm. On-call shifts will be assigned on average once per month.

$25.46/hr - $33.35/hr

$27.37/hr - $35.85/hr

$31.63/hr - $41.43/hr

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties

  • Operates, regulates and maintains water plant facility, including supply, storage, treatment, metering, sample collection, monitoring, laboratory work, equipment operation, equipment maintenance, system maintenance and repair as applicable.
  • Collects samples from various points in the system; performs laboratory tests; inspects and maintains equipment; lubricates operating equipment and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Reads and records gauge and flow meter charts. Performs back washing of filters as necessary; prepares sludge beds; draws sludge, cleans clarifier weirs and troughs.
  • May perform pipefitting such as threading, flanged, welded, sweated and mechanical connecting.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including SCADA system, computers, analyzers and laboratory instruments.
  • Performs inspections of various elements of system as required.
  • Maintains plant records and may assist in compiling reports to regulatory agencies, as necessary.
  • May assist in the performance of custodial and grounds maintenance duties as sweeping, mopping, and painting. Assists with plant tours for visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Plant Operator I/II/III/IV: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record are required.

Plant Operator I: One (1) year of experience in utility maintenance or plant operations and a valid Class D water treatment certificate preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

If candidate does not currently possess a Class D water treatment certificate, ability to obtain a Class D water treatment certificate required within the first 6 months to 1 year of employment.

Plant Operator II: Two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance or plant operations and must have a valid Class C water treatment certification.

Plant Operator III: Three (3) years of experience in utility maintenance or plant operations and must have a valid Class B water treatment certification.

Plant Operator III: Four (4) years of experience in utility maintenance or plant operations and must have a valid Class A water treatment certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: standard principles of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and the overall operation of a water system. Knowledge of the regulations concerning treatment plant operation and of the safety precautions relating to work around machinery and laboratory chemicals. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and tests performed in monitoring treatment plants and distribution and collection systems and maintenance procedures of treatment plant equipment.

Skills in: operating the equipment necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, including but not limited to SCADA system, computers, analyzers and laboratory instruments. Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; use standard office and water management software; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Must be able to work on call (stand by), shift work and a variable work schedule. Must be able to work in a team environment and build strong working relationships with supervisor and peers. Able to communicate effectively to both supervisor and peers.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed in a standard office environment as well as an outside setting, with frequent to constant use of a personal computer. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines. Tasks frequently require both inside and outside work, exposure to chemicals, and local travel. Employee may occasionally be walking on uneven surfaces and working with heights. Employee may occasionally be exposed to extreme temperatures, gases/fumes/dust, moderate to high noise levels, vibrations, and light to heavy equipment operations. Employee may rarely work in traffic or be required to travel out of town.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly grasping, fingering, and handling items as well as talking and hearing. Employee will frequently be sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time, use of near visual acuity and frequently moving objects weighing over 10 pounds. Occasionally tasks require stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, balancing, reaching, moving objects weighing over 50 pounds, use of far visual acuity, depth perception, color discrimination and peripheral vision. Employee may rarely have some tasks requiring running or moving objects weighing over 100 pounds.
