Job Description:

This position manages, supervises, leads and motivates a team of drivers and coordinators to provide transportation services in support of Intermountain Healthcare's mission. The manager will have primary accountability for all transportation activities undertaken by our fleet of semitrailers. This position will be responsible for compliance to all federal and state rules and regulations which apply to heavy fleet operations. This manager will also be responsible to administer driver's road tests for all transportation drivers. This manager will fill in for Transportation Driver III employees who may be absent from the job.

Job Essentials

1. Responsible to perform the following functions for heavy fleet operations:
a. Leads and manages employees: Responsible to interview, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, pay, discipline, and terminate employees. Ensures employees meet all requirements by coordinating with employee health, risk management, compliance, payroll and human resources.
b. Oversees customer relations: Responsible to set up new customer accounts and maintain customer relations with existing customers. Represents department on various teams and committees, resolve service issues, manage dispatch operations and process monthly customer billing.
c. Oversees logistics: Responsible to establish routes and schedules, audit route performance, establish standard processes, identify and implement process improvements, and minimize department expenses.
d. Oversees administrative operations: Develops budgets and identifies new business opportunities. Establishes rates, establishes department procedures, establishes department goals and evaluates progress. Interfaces with other departments (such as risk management, information systems, compliance, human resources, finance, accounting, etc.) for operational support. Monitors expenses, receipt of invoices, payment of bills, and vendor management.
e. Oversees vehicles and equipment: Develops standards, procedures, and practices in the purchase, use, maintenance and operation for department vehicles. Manages maintenance, fuel purchases and consumption, vendor expenses and audit procedures to minimize vehicle total cost of ownership. Identifies, maintains, and manages other necessary systems, equipment and tools required by transportation drivers and coordinators.
2. Manages the human, financial and equipment resources as efficiently and effectively as possible. Provides feedback, development opportunities, recognition, rewards and coaching to staff; attracts and retains productive employees, facilitates challenging tasks and assignments; utilizes his or her team to accomplish team goals by identifying strengths of individuals among the team; provides challenging and stretching tasks and assignments.
3. Responds to customer inquiries and feedback in a timely manner. Assigns appropriate service recovery response to ensure high level of customer satisfaction. Cleary conveys and receives information and ideas in a manner that engages the listener, helps them understand and retain the message, and invites response and feedback. Keeps others informed as appropriate.
4. Safely operates a commercial motor vehicle in a variety of conditions and environments to complete deliveries of equipment, packages, specimens and supplies. Stays aware of conditions and circumstances that affect one's own safety or the safety of others. Protects the physical well-being of personnel and self against work related accidents, injuries or other debilitations.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree -or- five years of transportation-related work experience. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.

  • A valid driver's license with no restrictions

  • A valid DOT CDL Medical Card.

  • DOT to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

  • Supervisory or management experience.

  • Able to use basic computer software and applications.

  • Able to understand and follow department procedures and practices.

  • Able to comply with Intermountain Healthcare's Motor Vehicle Driver Policy.

  • Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • 21 years of age or older as required by the DOT to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

  • Able to load and unload carts and pallets.

  • Able to safely operate and maneuver forklifts in tight spaces while loading and unloading pallets from docks and trailers.

  • Able to safely operate trucks and equipment in all weather and light conditions and must have good vision physical agility and good motor skills.

  • Able to load and unload boxes, totes, linen, and pallets.

  • Able to safely operate and maneuver pallet jacks in tight spaces while loading and unloading pallets from docks and trucks.

  • Able to safely operate vans and trucks with a GVW between 10,000 and 26,000 lbs. in all weather and light conditions and must have good vision, physical agility, and good motor skills.

Physical Requirements:

Seeing, sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, and walking.
