Job Description
Research Assistant- RI Injury Smith
Requisition ID 2024-50475 Category Research
Overview

The Center for Injury Research and Policy contributes to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) as one of only eight pediatric hospital reporting sites among a network of 100 hospitals nationally. More than 20,000 children are treated for an injury in the emergency department at Nationwide Children's Hospital annually. The NEISS Research Assistant (NRA) is supervised by the NEISS Program Coordinator (NPC). The primary duty of the NRA is to extract data from the medical records of children who are treated for an injury in the Nationwide Children's Hospital emergency department and enter these data into the NEISS/ NEISS All-Injury Program database during weekdays according to established protocol. The NRA assists the NPC with this responsibility. The NRA also analyzes data and prepares responses and reports for the CPSC and PI. The NRA assists the NPC and PI in the preparation of reports, publications, educational materials, and grant proposals using NEISS data. The position requires highly detailed work, near 100% accuracy, and sensitivity to time requirements established by the CPSC. Data are transmitted to the CPSC from Nationwide Children's Hospital daily. These data are analyzed by researchers at the CPSC, Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital, and elsewhere. Information gathered from the NEISS allows estimation of the number and types of injuries treated in hospital emergency departments nationwide and provides evidence for public awareness campaigns, consumer product safety standards, and product recalls as needed.
